Iron Sharpens Iron: Why We Need People Who Strengthen Our Faith
Share
“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” — Proverbs 27:17
We weren't created to walk through life alone. God places people in our lives who encourage us, challenge us, pray for us, and sometimes tell us what we need to hear—even when it isn't what we want to hear.
Proverbs 27:17 gives us a powerful picture of those relationships:
“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”
Just as one piece of iron can sharpen another, the right people can help strengthen our character, deepen our faith, and encourage us to become who God is calling us to be.
We Need People Who Challenge Us
A good friend doesn't simply agree with everything we say. Sometimes we need someone who will lovingly challenge us when we're heading in the wrong direction.
- Someone who asks the difficult question.
- Someone who reminds us what Scripture says.
- Someone who encourages us to keep going when giving up would be easier.
- That kind of friendship isn't always comfortable—but growth rarely is.
- Sharpening involves friction.
And sometimes God uses the people closest to us to reveal areas where we need to grow.
We Need People Who Encourage Us
Iron sharpening iron isn't only about correction. It's also about encouragement.
Life can wear us down. There are seasons when our faith feels strong and others when we struggle to see what God is doing. That's when having faithful people around us matters.
A simple text saying, “I'm praying for you,” can change someone's day.
A friend reminding us of God's faithfulness can restore hope when we're discouraged.
Sometimes we need someone else to believe with us until we can find the strength to believe again.
Choose Your Circle Wisely
The people we spend time with influence us. They influence our attitudes, decisions, priorities, and even how we see ourselves.
That's why choosing relationships rooted in faith, honesty, encouragement, and accountability matters.
Ask yourself:
- Do the people closest to me encourage me to grow closer to God?
- More importantly, Am I doing the same for them?
Proverbs 27:17 isn't only about finding people who sharpen us. It's also a reminder that we are called to sharpen others.
Be the Person Someone Else Needs
You don't need to have all the answers to strengthen someone else's faith.
- Pray with them.
- Encourage them.
- Listen without judging.
- Speak truth with love.
- Celebrate their victories.
- Stand beside them during their struggles.
Remind them who they are in Christ when they've forgotten. Sometimes the greatest gift we can give another person is simply refusing to let them walk through a difficult season alone.
Stronger Together
Faith is personal, but it was never meant to be lived entirely by ourselves.
- We need community.
- We need accountability.
- We need encouragement.
- We need people willing to stand beside us and say, “Keep going. God isn't finished yet.”
At Faith Real Apparel, we believe the words of Scripture aren't simply meant to be read—they're meant to shape how we live and how we treat one another.
So find the people who strengthen your faith. Be someone who strengthens theirs.
Pray together. Grow together. Encourage one another.
Because when faith-filled people challenge, support, and strengthen each other, something powerful happens:
Iron sharpens iron.
Faith Isn't Just Worn. It's REAL. It's Lived.
