A T-shirt that no longer belongs in your closet doesn’t necessarily belong in the trash.

With a little creativity, an old cotton tee can become a cleaning cloth, reusable tote, pet toy, pillow, quilt, or even a meaningful piece of wall art.

Upcycling helps extend the useful life of clothing while reducing unnecessary textile waste. It also encourages us to slow down and think differently about the things we own.

For Christians, there is another meaningful perspective: stewardship.

God calls us to be wise with what He has entrusted to us. That includes our time, resources, possessions, and the world around us. We don’t have to live perfectly or save every scrap of fabric. Sometimes it simply means making more thoughtful choices when we can.

How to Choose the Right T-Shirts for Upcycling

Before you begin cutting, sort your old shirts into three categories.

DIY Shirts: These are stained, stretched, faded, or outdated shirts you probably wouldn’t wear or donate. They’re perfect for experimenting with a new project.

Donation Shirts: If a shirt is still in good condition but simply isn’t your style anymore, consider donating it. Make sure it’s clean and free from significant stains, holes, or damage.

Keepsake Shirts: Set aside shirts with sentimental value. These might include family vacation shirts, church event tees, sports jerseys, school shirts, concert tees, or something that reminds you of a loved one or an important chapter in your life.

These meaningful shirts may be perfect for a memory quilt, pillow, framed display, or another project that preserves the story behind them.

12 Creative Ways to Upcycle Your Old T-Shirts

1. Braided T-Shirt Rug

Cut several old T-shirts into long strips and braid the fabric together to create a colorful rug.

Depending on the method you choose, you can sew or secure the braided sections together. Use different colors to create a pattern that works with your home décor.

2. Cleaning Rags

This may be the easiest upcycling project of all.  Soft cotton T-shirts make excellent reusable cleaning cloths. Cut them into squares and use them for dusting, wiping counters, cleaning windows, washing the car, or tackling everyday household messes.

Wash them and use them again instead of reaching for disposable paper towels.

3. Reusable Gift Bags

Have an old Christmas shirt, vacation tee, or shirt with a fun graphic?  Turn it into a reusable gift bag.

A few simple cuts and stitches can transform an old shirt into creative packaging that becomes part of the gift itself. You can even tie the top with leftover fabric strips or ribbon.

4. Bowl and Mug Holders

Old cotton fabric can be repurposed into holders, cozies, or wraps for bowls and mugs. These can make cute additions to your kitchen or thoughtful handmade gifts.  Just remember these are not microwave safe.

5. Braided Pet Toys

Cut T-shirts into long strips, braid them tightly, and tie secure knots at both ends to create a simple tug toy for your dog.

You can also use strips of fabric for supervised enrichment activities for cats.

Always supervise pets with homemade toys and remove the toy if the fabric becomes torn or pieces begin coming loose.

6. Headbands and Scrunchies

T-shirt fabric is naturally soft and stretchy, making it great for simple hair accessories like a headband or scrunchy.

Use strips to create headbands or scrunchies for exercising, gardening, cleaning, crafting, or simply keeping your hair out of your face.

7. Reusable Tote Bags

One of our favorite ideas is turning an old T-shirt into a reusable tote.

Depending on the design, you can make a simple tote with minimal sewing—or sometimes none at all.

Use your finished bag for groceries, books, gym clothes, craft supplies, farmers market trips, or everyday errands.

Bonus: If the original shirt has a graphic you love, your tote will still carry a little piece of its original personality.

8. Throw Pillows

Have a favorite shirt that no longer fits but you can’t bear to part with?

Turn it into a pillow cover.

Vintage graphics, meaningful Scripture shirts, school tees, vacation shirts, and concert shirts can all become unique décor while preserving the memories connected to them.

9. DIY Apron

With some creative cutting and basic sewing skills, an oversized T-shirt can become a lightweight apron.

Use it while cooking, baking, gardening, painting, crafting, or working on messy projects with the kids or grandkids.

10. Plant Hangers

T-shirt fabric can be cut into strips and knotted to create a soft, boho-inspired plant hanger.

This is an especially fun project if you have shirts in coordinating colors.

Just make sure your finished hanger is strong enough to safely support the weight of the plant and container before hanging it.

11. T-Shirt Wall Art

Some shirts are simply too meaningful to cut into cleaning rags.

Instead, turn them into art.

A favorite Scripture shirt, church retreat tee, family reunion shirt, team jersey, or concert tee can be framed or stretched over a canvas.

Suddenly, something that was hidden in a drawer becomes part of your home's story.

12. Memory Quilt

This one requires more time and sewing ability, but the finished result can become a treasured family keepsake.

Cut the graphic portions of meaningful shirts into squares and sew them together to create a memory quilt.

Consider shirts from childhood, vacations, school events, sports teams, churches, ministries, concerts, family reunions, or loved ones.

A memory quilt isn't simply a way to reuse old clothing.

It tells a story.

And someday, it may become something another generation treasures.

You don't have to be an experienced crafter to give upcycling a try. Keep these simple tips in mind:

• Start with an easy project before attempting something complicated.
• Practice on shirts that don't have sentimental value.

• Measure twice and cut once.
• Save buttons, fabric strips, and other usable pieces for future crafts.
